KEBYAR JOURNAL
The Kebyar journal has historically, from 1983 to 1999, been published in Portland, Oregon. However, due to the untimely passing of the founder and editor, Jack Golden, publication of the journal has been assumed by others on the Board of Directors. The journal has been erroneously referred to as a quarterly in several articles published about the organization, but our policy is to publish as often as the material we receive warrants and our volunteer labor allows.
Since 1983 we have published 75 issues in varying size and with increased quality. In 1994(Volume 12) we published 2 issues - numbers 57 and 58. In 1995(Volume 13) we published one issue - number 59. The 1996 issue (#60) deals with the design-build mode of practice. The 1997 issue(Volume 15, issue #62) features the work of Jones Studio; an Arizona based design team, comprised of two brothers, demonstrating an extraordinarily inventive approach to design - integrating sustainable architecture, area history and traditional lifestyles. The 1998 journal (Volume 16, issue #63) presents the life and work of Joseph Henry Wythe featuring his very latest achievement - Unicorn Farm, his new home and studio.
Our 1999 journal (Volume 17, issue #64), features the work of Robert Harvey Oshatz. Robert was featured previously, in the second issue of our second year of existence, over fifteen years ago. The work Oshatz has completed since our earlier issue is of substantial significance and we feel it is important to document his more recent architectural accomplishments; we believe you will agree.
Our issue of the journal (Volume 18.1, issue #65), published May 2000, features John R. Kay of British Columbia, Canada. Since starting his own practice in 1967, Mr. Kay has had one hundred thirty-two of his designs built. His work is bold and demonstrates a very distinct architectural character that is unmistakable, clearly distinguishable in all of his buildings.
Our first journal of 2001 (Volume 19.1, issue #66), published March 2001, is a Memorial Dedication to Bruce Goff. This issue contains many photographs of Mr. Goff and also, many tributes and recollections by his students, apprentices, clients, and colleagues. This issue is a very moving memorial to the master. The second journal of 2001 features Oregon architect, Glen Small. This journal features many interesting ideas and projects from Mr. Small's early work, about thirty years ago, to projects in planning at this time.
In 2002 we published two journals. The first (Volume 20.1, issue #68), features an essay on "Fractal Architecture" by Douglas Boldt. Our second (Volume 20.2, issue #69), features the architecture of Don E. Erickson, from Chicago, IL. Both of these are listed below.
In 2003 we published journal, Volume 21, issue #70. This issue features The art and architecture of Vitor Ruvio Forte, from Portugal, also listed below.
No journal published in 2004 or 2005.
Issue # 71 Bruce Goff Oklahoma Guide published in June of 2006.
Issue #72 Celebrating the life and work of Nari Gandhi published November 2007.
Issue # 73 Art and Architecture published October 2008.
Issue #74 25 YEARS OF FRIENDS OF KEBYAR published June 2009.
Issue #75 The Art & Architecture of Gary McCowan published September 2010.
Issue #76 American Organic Architecture published December 2011.
Although not always, the journal is usually a monograph featuring the work of a single architect.
We are working on future Journals.
We are all unpaid volunteers here at Friends of Kebyar if you have editing or other skills and would like to help the cause, contact the Friends of Kebyar.

"...the reality of architecture is not contained in the roof and walls, but in the space within. It is the space that is." - Nari Gandhi
Friends of Kebyar will establish some "firsts" with this Journal. This is a posthumous publication on the great Indian architect Nari Gandhi, who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1950's. There is currently no book publication or monograph on Gandhi -- only a handful of magazine articles (none in the U.S.) have ever published his work. We will be THE source on Gandhi for years. Kebyar's previous posthumous editions (those on Wright, Mackintosh, Goff) have never been this colorful, nor larger, nor of a scale that presents as much new material on a subject as this. This will be the largest (at 56 pages) and represent the most researched (over 80 sources of information) Kebyar Journal to date.
Nari was an apprentice at Taliesin during the last years of Frank Lloyd Wright's life. He returned to India to practice architecture until his death at too young an age. We will show just some of his very creative work.
